"The manufacturer of popular ointment Zam-Buk says it is losing millions because illegal copies of the product are swamping shop shelves. Pharmaceutical company Bayer believes that there are more than two million counterfeit tins of Zam-Buk on the market.

The company has been flooded with calls from panicked consumers after newspaper advertisements warned of the fakes.

Spokesman Brian Moloto said: “We advise people who have been using fake Zam-Buk to immediately see their doctor as a precaution because we do not know what ingredients it contains.”

He asked buyers of the fake product — which is packed in 7g tins, is not green like the original and smells different — to contact the company so that its representatives can collect the tins.

Beyer changed the design of the Zam Buk tin last year after discovering that counterfeiters had duplicated it."

And the Thailand product (made by the very well known Bayer Pharmaceuticals) is as close to the original Zam-Buk as you can get. Here are the active ingredients:

Eucalyptus Oil 5.02 %
Camphor / Menthol 1.76 %
Oil of Thyme 0.50 %
Colophony 2.51 %

And here are the active ingredients as shown on an old tin of it when Fisons made it in the UK:

Eucalyptus Oil B.P 5.0%
Camphor B.P 1.8%
Thyme Oil BPC 1949 0.50%
Colophony BP 2.5%

Finally the new, reformulated Rose & Co product, as sold by Amazon:

Petrolatum, Eucalyptus Globulus (Eucalyptus) oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Pinus Sylvestris (pine) oil, Camphor, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) oil, Limonene, Linalool, CI75810 (chlorophyl)

It's a different formulation and leaves out the Colophony (Rosin).
