Krakow & Auschwitz museum.

Looking at booking a mini break to Krakow & a visit to the Auschwitz museum.

I would be flying from Newcastle or Durham Tees Valley.

Can anyone recommend a hotel & advice on the transport system between Krakow & the museum.

Thanks.

There are plenty of buses from Krakow.

Check about coming back though, I got stranded after about 3pm.

    Can vouch for this place:

  • When I've had a quick browse on the internet, it looks like there is a organised bus trip which picks people up at their hotel & returns them after the trip.

Now just trying to find a reasonably priced flight. Looks like all flights have increased in price during the Euros & the Olympics.

Might have to try for later in the year.

If you are just going for the museum then fly to Katowice, usually much cheaper to fly to and to stay in and much closer to Auschwitz than Krakow.

That said Krakow is a really beautiful city and certainly worth a visit if you can factor it in.

All tours at Auschwitz are now guided after 10am,i think.

Dont let it put you off its well worth it and the guides are a mine of information.

As for getting there,i paid a taxi driver 70zl for 2 of us,paid him 20zl upfront and the remainder on the return journey. The guy waited outside Auschwitz and then took us to Birkenau where we wandered for another 45mins.

  • Thanks ess0two. Will check it out.

I think it's the flights that are going to be the main expense unfortunatly.

Don't do what we did and take the train - it took forever to get there and we only had about an hour before the last train back to Krakow. I would also recommend taking the bus tour or a taxi.

You should also visit the saltmines if you have time - they are well worth visiting. We took the train there and I think it cost about 80p each way

From Krakow Airport, turn right, walk for around 4 minutes and get the little train that takes you into the centre of the town. Walk out of the railway station, across the square, and you're facing the Hotel Europeski where we stayed for three nights last year. Lovely hotel, with breakfast and very reasonable.
Take the bus from the bus station over the road direct to Auschwitz.
    Normal people worry me.

Be aware that the museum occupies two sites Auschwitz 1 (smaller, with the Arbeit macht frei gates), and Birkenau much bigger with the train sidings, remains of the gas chambers and wooden huts.

You will probably want to see both. They are approx 1.5 miles apart
  • Thanks for the recommendations so far.

Yes, I would be definatly wanting to see both. Also, planning on going to the salt mines.
  • I'm wondering whether it would be better to go through a travel agent for this mini break?
