Is it possible for a bank to autherise some of a payment and not the rest?

Hiya

To cut a long story short.

I ordered 3 products in one online transation totalling to nearly 800 pounds.

Only 2 got delieved and when I quiried this, they told me it was because the bank didn't authorize the most expensive item.

Can this even be done? Surely you cant authorize part of a payment and not the rest? The bank told me the total amount was waiting to be accepted.

Is the merchant having me on? Im so confused..any light into this would be great! Thank you :)
