Laptop Upscaler?

Hey guys
Becuase of living in a tiny room in a house share i try to have as few componets for my media centre as possible. At the moment i play my DVDs through my laptop onto my HDTV via VGA.
I've been looking at getting a DVD upscsler for a while now and i've seen a bargain one for 35 quid. As far HDMI players go this is a good price but is there a bit of software i can put on my laptop that will do this for me anyway?
