Help- pc died

One of my sons has all his children's pics in his computer. Today it "made a funny noise and the screen went weird, all covered in lines"- and now it's dead. He is wondering if he has lost all his pics? Says he has some in his ipod but doesn't know how to get them out into another computer. Is this making sense to anybody ? :D

Laptop or Desktop, ?? it may be he has a dead graphics card , or a dead monitor or even he is dead drunk :D. Not much to go on really , but if it has an external monitor socket he may be able to connect it to a TV/another monitor...However "dead" is a misnomer, does his machine have any lights on it eg disk active we are in the dark more info would help.

If I were you I'd remove the internal disk drive (HDD/SSD) and connect it to a working computer as secondary storage. Then test it using something like this before attempting to access any data on it.

Make and model? He can just use a hard drive enclosure. Costs from £3 to £11.

I dont understand a word but it looks like all is not lost - thanks ! :) his wee local shop has a bad rep for being unhelpful and just trying to flog you a new comp, so it's nice to have access to people on here who know this stuff :)

Can you elucidate on the precise nature of this 'funny noise' any further? It might help with diagnosis.
