DVD burner problems

Evening all.
Our DVD burner seems to have a problem. We tried burning some video files to a disc, using DVDFlick software (as we have numerous times) and it keeps coming up with an error, something about the "program memory update error" and that the file is too big. We're trying to burn around 3 hours of video, 12 files of around 176mb each. The blank discs hold 4.3gb but the message tells us that the total folder (containing the video files) is 8.87gb, which makes no sense.
The burner will play CDs (not DVDs as we only have Windows media player on the pc) so we don't think that the laser is knackered or anything.
We also tried to burn using Nero and again, it is saying that the file is too big at 8.3gb.
There is nothing else lurking in the folder, the drivers are all working for the burner, device manager shows no problems.
What next?

What format? You can only fit so much onto a disc using DVD-Video.0 -
Motherboard? Make sure your Chipset Driver is the correct one. Do you have enough space on your HDD?0

I had a similar problem. Have you accidentally changed settings on DVD flick or Nero from DVD-5 (single layer DVD) to DVD-9 (dual layer DVD)?
Make sure you have lots of space on your HDD (10GB should be enough) and use Nero or whatever to burn a disk image to the Hard disk (a huge .iso file). This bypasses the DVD recorder and you can see the final size of the disk image. You should be able to use Nero to burn the disk image to DVD. Don't forget to delete the huge iso file when you have finished with it.

Thanks for all replies. There is loads of space on the HDD, the files are bog-standard MPEG format and we can't work out why there is suddenly a problem, we've done this loads of times!
Dave, thanks for your advice, I'll get Mr B to have a look at his settings in case he has changed them by mistake.
Looks like I'm not the only one....have found this.......

They suggest that it may be a firmware problem? Am going to have a look for updates but am not holding my breath, the burner is at least 3 years old."I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0
