Virgin Media - Unknown Outstanding Balance

Hello all.

I took out a contract with Virgin media for LL and BB in JAN 2011. Everything was set up correctly and all was well.

I have been using EXPERIAN over the last 4 months to double check credit history and improve a bad score ( from issues not concerned with Virgin ). I noticed when I did all of this that Virgin never showed on my report. I called Virgin and asked why this is ( even though its not bad, all my others show up with 0 Balance and satisfactory status ).

The reply i received was that its nothing to worry about and that they only will display this when there is a late payment or outstanding balance. I was told I pay all my bills and its a clean account.

Randomly today my credit score dropped over 80 points. I was shocked to see that Virgin media have now been listed on my report and showing an out standing balance of £33. I looked at this history and its an outstanding balance from Feb 2011!

I have no idea why this is. I spoke to customer services and they stated that i have paid all my bills on time and there is nothing showing on their account.

Where do i go next ?

I sent a complaint letter to Virgin stating my credit history to be wiped but Im at a complete loss for the next month. I'm seeking finance for the future and 80 points can make or break a financial decision.

So are virgin in agreement that you dont owe them the money and werent ever late?

If so just write to them under the DPA requesting that they remove this incorrect addition to your credit report.

thank you for the reply, it does help understanding what process or legislation to use for this.

i spoke to them twice and both advisors confirmed no late payments or outstanding balance.

    http://www.ico.gov.uk/for_organisations/data_protection/the_guide/principle_6/correcting_inaccurate_personal_data.aspx

Q: An organisation has inaccurate information about me. What can I do?

You should write to the organisation explaining what the problem is and where appropriate provide them with any evidence to show what the information should say. Keep copies of this correspondence. If, after a reasonable amount of time (we would recommend 28 days) the information has not been corrected, you can make a complaint under the Data Protection Act. Please ensure that you supply copies of your correspondence, evidence and, if applicable, any response you receive.

So as above, put a complaint in writing to them, send it recorded delivery and if they fail to correct the information or provide information showing it is correct, lodge a complaint with the ICO.

You can also contact Experian regarding an incorrect entry, they will then contact Virgin who can confirm that it is incorrect. There should be something with the credit report explaining how to do this, you can also have notes added to your file as well.

If Virgin have added it to Experian they may well have added it to the other two - callcredit and equifax. You might want to check these as well

Paying for your 'credit score' is a waste of money and meaningless. All credit agencies simply use the data from experian and equifax and interpret it in their own ways so the 'score' from experian is just an indication at very best and not worth paying for.

    Hi

I went on my credit report today to find Virgin media had put a late payment marker on my account for January bill and also from an account in 2007 a default appeared which was not there before. I spoke to Virgin who were absolutely useless tried to explain to lady what had happened and she said no late payment was made if i am worried about my credit report get in touch with my bank (what good would that be they dont mark my credit file up) anyway to shorten this story i ended up having to email their underwriting department about it and also spoke to experian and they also raised an issue about it. When i spoke to virgin they blamed experian and experian blamed virgin for the errors talk about passing the book. As soon as this is sorted i will be leaving them for good.
  • Hi, the issues has happened with me..i had a virgin media ccount in 2008 and suddenly out of nowhere a Virgin Media related default has appeared in my credit report on 6th may. I am planning to call both virgin and experian on Monday, any one else having the same issue.

Hey, pretty much the exact same thing has happened to me, except my account was in 2009.

Have you done anything yet, i'm not too sure where to begin??

I am having the same issue (default from 2007 account i had appeared on 6th May), I spoke to Virgin Media who accepted responsibility, told me my account was in credit and advised me to sort with CreditExpert. I shall keep you posted as to my progress. I drafted this email which may help...

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    Virgin Media Account:

    Regarding: Default on Credit Report

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment in your processes regarding one of my previous accounts with Virgin Media.

On 6th May 2012 I received a Default on my Experian Credit Report against my name due to this account.

According to the customer service representative I spoke to on 29th May at 9:15am named Karl, there was no outstanding balance on this account, in fact it is in credit by 77pence and this default is incorrect.

This was confirmed verbally and as such I expect it to be removed with immediate effect.

Had I have wished to apply for a mortgage, loan or a contract of any sort in this previous month (which I very nearly did before noticing this default) I would have been incredibly embarrassed and inconvenienced.

I do hope you can go some way to immediately rectifying this and restoring my faith in Virgin Media as a company.

    Kind regards,
  • This is interesting, this has happened to me this month. Virgin have posted a default from 2007 dated 3 June 2012(in advance!) My situation is that Imoved house to an area where Virgin didn't have any cable so I closed the account as they couldn't offer me what I was getting at my old place. They then started hassling me for the balance of the contract £100. Naturally I refused as they could not provide me with a service. They then put a debt collector on to me with whom I had a pleasant conversation and offered to see them in court. They finally dropped the matter in 2008. Now it's back! I have written to Experian and asked them to intervene and also sent a snotty letter to Virgin. Let's see what happens...
