I can't open a bank account!

Okay, bit of a struggle.

About 4 years ago I had a bank account with Lloyds TSB, I took out a credit card the day I turned 18, and well, spent the full 1000 and never paid it back. Immature, I know. I've not been in contact with Lloyds since..

Basically, now, 4 years on, I have no bank account and have just started a new job. I've tried literally EVERY bank I know of; halifax, natwest, lloyds (they pretty much laughed at me), santander and barclays. I also tried a co op cash card and was also refused.

I'm really stuck as to what to do, and I need to open a bank account ASAP.

Sounds to me like because you've not paid you're credit card, you've been blacklisted!

Get a basic bank account or a savings account with an ATM card.

I'd avoid Lloyds TSB, Halifax and Bank of Scotland though. They could use right of set off to get the money back on your credit card.

Then you need to get hold of your credit files, depending on the banking group you apply to, the only reasons to withhold a basic account are suspicion of fraud, or in a few cases, debt within the group.

It is what is known as "fraud", and yes, very illegal.

even if it's a family's address? Jesus Christ

I've found that if you ask for a basic account by its account name and not just say "i want to open a basic bank account" you have more success. Find out the names of the ones you want to open and perhaps try again

Yes. Supplying incorrect information to a bank in order to obtain a facility or benefit you would not otherwise have been able to obtain is fraud. It would be detected as such and cause the OP all manner of issues.

Also there is no such thing as a blacklist, NI number or not. OP needs to get a copy of his credit report and find out what it is that's stopping him opening an account. Nothing you or I say will matter until he has done that. Committing fraud will make the issue immeasurably worse. Not being able to open even a basic bank account is an indicator of something being seriously wrong.

Of course this isn't the first time you've given stupid and reckless advice to people, and it probably won't be the last time either.
