Dates of cover for holiday insurance

Hi myself & my partner are travelling to the USA next month. My partner has some medical conditions to declare so we understand about informing the company we take the holiday insurance out with. My query is though (although its probably a really stupid question!) do we have to litterally book the cover from the date we are travelling to the date we are due back home. We wondered what would occur if something happened, for example, 2 days towards the end of our holiday & one of us were to end up being admitted to hospital for say a couple of weeks. Would those couple of weeks be covered too or litterally just up to the date we were due home?
thanks for any replies

All you really need to worry about is that you are covered from the day you leave Uk soil to the date that you return back onto UK soil (and remember that most USA flights back to the UK are overnight - so ensure your cover yourself for the day you land back into the UK)
Most companies will automatically extend cover if there is a delay in returning - such as being admitted into hospital, or there is a major delay with the flight (ash cloud situation - as an example). However, as you need to declare the medical conditions, there's no harm in clarifying with the insureres at the time.

If you have already booked your trip you should have insurance in place already otherwise if one or other of you is unable to go you would not be covered. As for the actual part when you are away, tell the insurer the dates you are going and the dates you are scheduled to return0

Travel insurance should be taken out as soon as the travel is booked so that you have cancellation cover in the event you are unable to travel due to accident or illness before you depart.
There are several topics here where people have failed to do that then had an incident which prevented them travelling which would have been covered had they taken out insurance. Unfortunately they all lost the cost of their travel.
You may have to try several companies before you find suitable insurance as they all have different underwriting and charge different amounts for various PEMC's.0
