I am sure people come to the forum for help and advice not for other users in their ivory towers offering their useless opinion!!!!.Do i need to point out that the cost of living has gone up and pay has not hence people are struggling with payments now which pre recession was not an issue. There does come a point where repairing your old car becomes finacially unviable!!!!! And a newer car would make sense especially if you were changing from a petrol to a diesel .For example a relatively cheap modern Fiat punto will give you 60mpg.

why would someone be trying to get finance when on a DMP cos their spending, for whatever reason, was out of control and they felt they needed to default on creditors by paying less per month than originally agreed.
There are plenty of reliable cars out their which are older you just need to find a good mechanic, my car is 12 years old and i have to have jobs done on it to keep it reliable

regarding your comment on head wobble
sometimes the only way to help people is to point out that they are making the wrong financhal decision by trying to buy things way beyond their means--- that is why the OP is on a DMP

their is no point sugar coating replys- an honest answer is better than what i feel is your approch to advise -- i get the feeling you would say " their their it will be alright" whilst drinking a cup of tea
Having read what OP has to say, they don't explicitly want finance. They appreciate the problems, they are asking for suggestions as to how to deal with their transport needs.

I have to say that I am not particularly known across these forums for sugar coating anything. A loan is a risk. But no car for most people these days means the certainty of no way of getting to work and therefore no income. Undesirable it may be, but if a loan is the only way of breaking out, then a loan it may have to be. Other options should be explored too - but if these don't work. I would have to say take a loan for the cheapest car which will do the job. It is a reluctant answer, based solely on the fact that it is access to a wage. And for a loan for anything which does not assist with access to a wage, my answer is a firm NO.

That is an honest answer and you are out of order to suggest I have been dishonest.

I would particularly recommend Martin's Good Debt, Bad Debt video http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/quiz/good-debt/

interesting topic. we've been on a dmp since 2008 and my car is falling apart. Costs more than its worth to get it fixed. We have a little saved in the emergency fund and my plan is to see what i can sell mine for either as a car or as scrap and then go round local garages with a mechanic friend and see what i can haggle. Stressful though isn't it? Not thought of speaking to cccs about reducing payment fir a month or so. thanks for that idea. L2B.x
