new car needed when on a dmp advice please

Hi ,

We have been on a dmp since dec 2009 and it will be at least june2015'til we pay off all our debt. Unfortunately our old ford mondeo is knackered (needs anew fuel injection system Aaaargh!) so we have to get a new car.Spoke to CCCS about it but basically none of the options seem suitable and as we want a reliable car we just won't be able to get new finance with our credit history.

Anyone out there had experience of this ? Any advice appreciated.

How much do you pay to the CCCS? is it possbible to miss a couple of months payments which would cover a car?

Can you not drop your DMP payments for a few months, to save up enough money for a car? Other than that I can only suggest asking family for a loan of a car short term?

Can you get fuel systems from a scappy?

Thanks for your replies we have thought of this but it wouldhave to be a pretty cheap second hand car if we did this so might be no better off as need a reliable motor to get to work.

Also creditors wouldn't be happy about it either .

Hmm. My 15 year old car is reliable but worth very little. Sounds to me that you need a mechanic to help you make a sensible buy.

Not sure what you mean by a 'new' car but pretty sure you can get a reliable used car for the time being - we'd all love brand new cars to get us from A-B I'm sure but needs must! You can only buy what you can afford, that's all there is to it. However, it is reasonable to need a car for work purposes, you said you spoke to CCCS about the options - what were they?

It might be worth heading over to the motoring forum for some advice about reliable and affordable cars.

If the car is essential to getting to work, then no car means no work means no dmp payments means unhappy creditors.

Now, if you wobbled your head till it fell off, I think a few people might smile and quietly say "result!"

  • hi there, big fan of martin's, watch him on watchdog and I have looked through the forum's a few times over the last year, anyway, I understand to situation that you face, and would like to offer a helping hand

I have a 1994 Mercedes Benz with 12 months MOT currently on offer via ebay at £495, I can offer it to you for only £450 if this will help any ?
  • I'd get a reliable mechanic to go with you to look at some older used cars. Those which have large diesel engines that have done lots of motorway driving can still be reliable. Look for cars that have recently had things replaced i.e. cambelt, new battery etc.

why would someone be trying to get finance when on a DMP cos their spending, for whatever reason, was out of control and they felt they needed to default on creditors by paying less per month than originally agreed.
There are plenty of reliable cars out their which are older you just need to find a good mechanic, my car is 12 years old and i have to have jobs done on it to keep it reliable

regarding your comment on head wobble
sometimes the only way to help people is to point out that they are making the wrong financhal decision by trying to buy things way beyond their means--- that is why the OP is on a DMP

their is no point sugar coating replys- an honest answer is better than what i feel is your approch to advise -- i get the feeling you would say " their their it will be alright" whilst drinking a cup of tea
