5kw stove vs 8kw: Air vent questions

Am redoing our fireplace. Going to get a inset multifuel such as stovax riva or capitolfireplace.

We can get a 5kw or larger.

I am veering towards the larger firebox as it can control the air intake and reduce the kw. Also like the larger window and less onerous requirement on log length.

My only concern is the air vent. Just how bad are these? If its a continual cold air breeze when the stove is off then that would be a deal breaker for me.

Welcome any advice.

Part of the Furniture 500 Posts Name Dropper
    Interesting.

    Slightly worried about this statement:-

    'Black Hole' ventilation
    products provide the answer to
    the dangerous practice of
    ventilators being blocked off
    by occupiers who are being
    annoyed by draughts. This
    makes an important contribution
to safety. New tests show that
    while this works the ventilator
    may not pass the required
    amount of air when the
    appliance is operating.
    THEREFORE IT IS IMPORTANT
    THAT A SPILLAGE TEST IS
    CARRIED OUT AS REQUIRED BY
    THE BRITISH STANDARD AND
    GAS SAFE GOOD PRACTICE.

What's a spillage test? How much do they cost etc?

    Thanks

I just had a 8Kw stove fitted.. I am using through floor vents (found two round brass ship vents that are fitted flush to the exposed floor boards and gave me the air flow needed for the stove). I did not like the vents the fitter had.

Its a drafty victorian house and even the fitter said it was fairly pointless but needed for him to sign of the job. It has not added any extra drafts but if it was and the stove was off i will have no issues in covering them.

to be honest the vents are tiny. (think 3 two pence size in total) (including the surround the vents are 76mm each, which are bigger than needed but I wanted two for aesthetics. I could have got one which was 102mm.

see here http://www.sdslondon.co.uk/miscellaneous-vents/circular-vent-102-mm.html as it shows the air flow

I think its one of those things that comes down to common sense...

Have a look at whatstove web site before making a choice on stove..

We have a small fire running now at the correct temp just to take the chill off the house.

Are you putting an air brick in or through floor? you can get stoves that have the air vent direct to them... so no extra drafts in the house.
