    I seem to remember HSBC charge a 1% fee if you didn't buy them from HSBC.

    I've banked them with both LTSB and Nationwide previously without a problem, but I'm talking 2-3 years ago.

    It should be treated as a goods purchase, just make sure you select the right category (goods or services), you'll at least get some protection (even if the company is terrible).
