Hi,
We have an old cat on Metcam, every now and then when we want a prescription from the vet they want to check the cat over at great expense before they give us medication.
Medicatin is £25 for a small amount plus a vets bill, we dont mind paying for meds as it helps him get by from day to day, for 18 he's pretty fit but like us he's got a touch of arthritis and bits and bobs.
My question is does anyone know where we can get cheaper meds?
Being pensioners it getting expensive.

£8 from Petmeds....http://www.petmeds.co.uk/p-3561-metacam-oral-suspension-for-cats-15ml.aspx
You will need to negotiate with the vet to get at least a few repeat prescriptions each time and possibly lower consultation fees.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Mine has just been prescribed this in oral form ( dont know if it comes any other way
) but its also called meloxicam, the same anti- inflammatories as i am on.. It would be so much cheaper to use them..lol

Agree with the prescription from the vet and buy online.
I did this for Ben (dog one so obviously slightly different strength/sized bottle etc) and it was £18 for a 180ml bottle (the same sized bottle was £68 from the vet).
Even with the prescription it worked out at £15/month.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000

As pensioners can you not access RSPCA/PDSA facilities for lower cost meds?
The cost you are quoting for metacam is about double the cost online, but doesnt include postage and prescription fees. If you gte a 15ml pot it should last about 2 months.NOT a NEWBIE!

A vet has to write you a prescription if you ask for one. He can not insist that you buy the medication from him. However he is allowed to charge for the written prescription which has to be a reasonable fee. This so varies from one vet to another. As a guide I paid £10 for a written script recently. Also they are only allowed to write a script for up to 6 months supply for each animal.
This can still work out cheaper if you use an on-line vet pharmacy but choose one which is based in the UK (as then you are fairly confident your not buying fake medicines).
I use Pet Drugs on-linehttp://www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/site.aspx?i=ho0 , Vet Medic www.vet.medic.com and Viovet. www.viovet.co.uk/index.html who have all given me good service. If you use this code VVRMPJZYU you get £3 off your first order as long as you spend over £15.0 -

Just as a comparison for 15 ml pot of Metacam;
Vio vet price - £9.00 + £1.95 delivery
Pet Drugs on Line - £10.66 +£2.50
Vet Medic - £12.05 + free delivery
You will need a prescription from your vet to buy this, which he can charge you to write, (my last script cost £10) but you can ask him to write you one for 6 months supply, so you can buy more than 1 x 15ml pot. According to Hillbilly you will need 3 x 15ml pots to last 6 months.
If you are buying more than £29 worth of goods at Vio Vet you can then get free delivery and with this code VVRMPJZYU you can get £3 off your first order.
I haven't looked at all on line vet pharmacies but these above are ones which are based in the UK and I have had good service from in the past.:)0 -
Just a note
Vets have to legally see your pet every 6 months before prescribing any medication or writing out a prescription - so this side of the cost cannot be helped0
