Lead generation websites for tradesmen?

Any tradesmen use them? I use price engines (some dodgy ones come through) and do very well out of them. My workman, ratedpeople servicemagic, quotais etc are full of false numbers and just take your money , they give it back if asked for in 24 hours but if you miss the alert or forget its gone. Anyone else find its a minefield of dodging the quick money websites.

And as for vetting the tradesman what a joke, never been vetted upto today , luckily I am a qualified tradesman but anyone can sign up to being one on these lead services with out any proof whatsoever.

in my experience they don't work, I get a few leads from my website but none from the likes of yell and all the other directories, I tend to just put my name everywhere I can that's free and link to my site, probably get about 2 calls a day from local magazines, website directories etc promising me more work, fell for it quite a few times but never again. Always have cards on me, car and van full of signage, company name on back of hi-vis, leaflets in shops basically anything for free advertising, if it doesn't work I have lost nothing, if I were to sign up to every website and publication that promised me work I would have to double my rates and work 24/7 just to pay for them, thats if i got extra work that is!!
