OneTel now offering Line Rental

As I used to be with Onetel I was sent a flyer today giving me fifteen reasons to return to Onetel.

First reason as quoted:

You don't have to pay BT for line rental anymore, because we can now supply it to you and thats not all. At just £9.99 a month, our line rental is guaranteed to be cheaper than BT's.

This starts from 1 April 2005.

The only thing with that is that according section 3.4 of their terms & conditions is that if you are a 'line rental services' customer, they can bar access or charge a higher fee if you use another telephony company for calls (ie Call18866).
    Section 3.4:-

3.4 If you are a Line Rental Services customer and elect to use another provider for some or all of your calls we may at our sole discretion decide to (i) bar your use of indirect access codes, (ii) charge you a higher fee for your use of the Line Rental Service or (iii) disconnect the Line Rental Service.
This, I assume, is perfectly legal as it is only BT that have to provide access to other telephone providers. OFCOM have already stated that cable companies do not have to provide access to other telephone providers therefore I assume that OneTel would also be exempt like Telewest/NTL.

In view of the above, I know that i'm sticking with BT to ensure that I have unlimited use of other telephone providers (in particular, Call18866) especially as its only .51p extra per month in line rental charges.

    You can view OneTel's terms&conditions at http://www.onetel.co.uk/index.php/landlinetandc.

oh dear, I was hoping I could stop BT getting the grubby hands on my cash, but I want my options open for an alternative service.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

    Thanks for pointing that out.

I was thinking about switching, but was going to see if there were any other offers coming up.

But 18866 is the main consideration

So does this mean that you can't use OneTel on an NTL line ? My daughter has moved into a house that MAY not have a BT connection but it does have an NTL installation. I called OneTel and they said that she CAN use their service on an NTL line but I have had some problems with OneTel customer services recently so wonder if they are telling the truth here ! Anyone care to comment ?
Retired so trying to save even more!

You're ok to use OneTel on either a NTL, Telewest or BT line. As mentioned by jaimeo, you'll get a PhonePal that will automatically route outgoing calls via OneTel network.

I was referring to those that opted to have their line managed by OneTel (ie. pay line rental to OneTel) instead of BT. I think you need a BT line if you want OneTel to manage the line anyhow.

Although the line rental would only save you about £6 per year on One tel if you take out additional services (daller display, call divert, reminder call etc) there are more savings to be made.

BT charge £1.75 per month for one service then, for 2-4 services they charge £3.50 and if you take 5 or more its £5.00 per month.

One tell Charge £1.50 for one service and extra £1 for the second (£2.50 total) then 75p for each additional one.

I, taking 2 services would be an additional £1 a month better of and with line rental £18 a year better of with One tel.

But like others don't want to move due to 18866 issue, I just got my first bill from them, three months weekday calls £1.78 wooooooooooopie!!!

Just one point on the above if you took 4 services you would be better of with BT as BT charge £3.50 and one tel £4.00 this even wipes out any saving on your line rental.... Beware!

    Tony,

Depending on which services you have with BT, if one of them is call barring then you could use the Orchid dialler for barring saving you money.
