Most card's don't have that tho,

santander/rbs for example they just show the sort code.

lloyds tsb, halifax, nationwide, first direct, barclays, all show details of the bank account on their debit cards. However Natwest and Citibank don't.

OK, who apart from Jeremy Clarkson ever had fraudulent direct debits set up in their names?

I recall some posts on this very site which involve a number of well-known fraud tactics and setting up direct debits on your account first - I think the first one I spotted was relating to an odd (low value) direct debit which had been set up to a vet pet insurance scheme (to insure an animal)... I'm sure if you do a few searches the details will come up as this was quite some time ago and my memory is hazy... but suffice to say that fraud attempts DOES involve setting up direct debits on the odd occasion.

(This was a bit of a surprise to me, I have to point out - I've always taken the stance that you mentioned - since the info is so easily /readily available on cheques and bank cards I'd assumed no problems would stem from other people knowing them. Of course, you'd get your money back hopefully in the end because it's fraud activity... but it is quite a bit of potential short term pain.)

If your bank does an e-saver account that takes 2 minutes to open online, open one of those to receive any incoming payments.
