Re marriage wills help needed

Evening

My father has suffered a stroke, one of his requests was that he gets married before he dies.

We tried to arrange this due to the possibility of him dying and needed a form signed by the doc stating that he was

1.seriously ill and not expected to recover CHECK
2.cannot be moved to a place registered for marriages CHECK
3.understands the nature and purport of the marriage ceremony

they have denied him on the basis of no 3. We cannot be sure that he understands the nature and purport of the marriage ceremony sufficient to complete this form. So they sided on DENIED.

I have a few questions?

Are there any NHS guidelines for correct questions to be asked concerning this assessment?

Why would they not allow a dying man s wish to get married? You see it all the time on documentary's.

My father expressed that he wanted to get married to me, and i am only following instructions, surely that is enough for them.

What other steps can I take to arrange this for him?
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
Seek legal help if unsure.
Dont pay Private Parking tickets - they are mere invoices.

I dont understand - the doctor has confirmed he cant be moved to a place where he can get married - so how would he get married anyway, even if the doctor had signed the bit to say he was competant?

I would have thought the person he wishes to marry would probably be the better person to be trying to arrange this than yourself.

I'm sorry for your father's situation.

Surely your father's fiancee should be putting the case for getting married in hospital/hospice - might that not carry more gravitas?

Surely they would bring the appropriate registrar to the hospital to perform the ceremony at the bedside.

No, a place of marriage has to be licenced for marriages.

He may recover sufficiently to be married OP, where there's life etc........

Why is he so desperate to be married then?

You have the word 'wills' in the title, why?

Who's 'they' as in 'they have denied him on the basis of no 3.'?

It sounds like your father has been judged to lack the mental capacity to make this decision.
There is some guidance on the direct.gov about how mental capacity is assessed:
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Mentalcapacityandthelaw/Makingdecisionsforsomeoneelse/DG_195206

As for documentaries, I'm presuming you're referring to people who have a terminal illness who get married. From what you've said your father hasn't been turned down because he's dying but because he is considered not capable of making the decision.

    Hi King100

If marrying legally is not a possibility, would your father appreciate having a small blessing ceremony?

Religious or lay people (humanist celebrants amongst others) could conduct a small blessing ceremony where he exchanges rings and vows with his partner.

I'm so sorry you're going through this sad situation :(

No, you can get married at a hospital or even at home if one person can't leave.
