Hijack this log help please

Can someone have a look at this log please. Teenage son got onto the computer whilst parents were away and it's not been the same since

I've done a full scan with malwarebytes which came back clear but it's sluggish, the DVD drive won't work (control panel says its working fine and I have reupdated the drivers) Light comes on when you put a disc in and you can hear it whiring but it wont read it.

Any pointers what to try next appreciated.

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\PROGRA~1\SEARCH~1\Datamngr\datamngr.dll C:\PROGRA~1\SEARCH~1\Datamngr\IEBHO.dll

gets highlighted on your scan as undesirable.

I would install: Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.60 - FileHippo.com and run a QUICK SCAN first. Remove everything it finds and post log here. Then update definitions, run a FULL SCAN. Remove everything it finds and post log here.

A full scan with malwarebytes may take a long time & is a bit unnecessary - The quick scan is designed to catch anything capable of entering memory.

    Thanks for your responses.

I ran a full scan with updated malwarebytes and it came back clear. I'll use control panel to remove toolbars / applications as noted above, anything else I need to do?

Any thoughts on the DVD Drive??

Sorry I missed the other things! Has been a while since I've read the logs.

But I would still run a full scan after a quick scan. The quick scan removes the majority and speeds the computer up a bit for the full scan. The full scan does pick up stuff the quick scan doesn't. Even if it doesn't find anything, I think it's peace of mind knowing that the full scan didn't find anything.

The only thing the full scan may find over the quick scan are harmless traces.

Perhaps these will put you mind at rest re: Quick vs full.

The full scan cant catch any more malware that has the ability to enter memory because that portion of the scan is identical for both versions. Both versions use the same registry scanner, same heuristic checks, same load point checks and same memory checks. The only thing that full scan can do better is to catch a few extra traces .

The quick scan does memory, load points, all heuristic scans that the full scan does and all common malware locations.

I have never needed the full scan to remove the malware I am researching and have not even run one on any of my research machines this year.

MBAM almost never needs to be run in full scan, we designed it that way. Quick will catch 100% of malware that can enter memory 100% of the time.

Hmm... strange. I definitely have had malwarebytes find stuff on a full scan straight after a clean quick scan...

Hmm... strange. I definitely have had malwarebytes find stuff on a full scan straight after a clean quick scan...

It may do so - the point is these are either none executable traces - harmless files that have no way of entering memory - or installation/setup files (most likely PuPs that install unwanted toolbars etc) that have been saved by the user to some bizarre, totally random, non-default location. Again these would have no way of entering memory unless deliberately executed by the user, and thankfully these scenarios are few and far between.

As the full scan checks all folders, then the system volume information folder (system restore) will be scanned. Files may be found here that have been backed up by windows (it has no way to distinguish good from bad), but once again they have no way of entering memory unless a system restore to a point where the files are restored is performed - A moot point really as system restore should always be flushed after a malware infection.

The only other way files that are capable of entering memory may be found after performing a quick scan is if there is active malware present that MBAM doesn't detect or can't remove - some rootkits for example - in that case running any number of either quick or full scans isn't going to help at all.
