I used one for a week. Fantastic for browsing on a Lion iMac, and launching expose etc. Really clever.
Trying to copy and paste cells in a spreadsheet? Forget about it.
IMHO It's a consumer device devised for the consumer internet. Not computing.0 -

It would be helpful to you to learn the difference between a computer and a computer operating system…
But I digress.
An Apple Magic Trackpad doesn't need Mac OS X Lion: it can be run on a Mac that’s using OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4 or higher.
An Apple Magic Mouse can be run on a Mac that’s using OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or higher.
Both require a Mac with functioning Bluetooth.
Mac OS X Lion enables more features a on Magic Trackpad than Snow Leopard.
This is especially pertinent on older Macbooks/Pro which can run OS X Lion but have inbuilt trackpads that that do not, themselves, support all the gestures possible under OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion.
As pointed out by BRSurvivor, the two devices are not fully interchangeable; a Magic Mouse is better for some tasks, a Magic trackpad for others. It’s better to have both.
On my desktop Mac, I keep a Magic Mouse on the left of my keyboard and a Magic Trackpad on the right of it.
Use Magic Prefs with both and put Mighty Monitor in your Dashboard.
You might want to consider also the Mobee rechargeable devices that are designed for use in conjunction with them.
Much depends on whether your Mac is a laptop, a desktop or a laptop that you use as a desktop.
For example, I use the Mobee Magic Charger induction pad device with the Magic Mouse for my desktop Mac, but Energiser Lithium batteries in the Magic Mice I use with my laptop and (Mac-hacked) netbook.

Ive had one but i returned it. Enjoyed it for a week but as poster said above very hard for spreedsheets and would of kept it but for web surfing good the tap tap and click and drag is good but since i got fat fingers i found it annoying.

I have one and hardly use it. I find it a bit of a gimmick, certainly not worth the money.
I would suggest you go into Apple store and try before you buy or buy from John Lewis, 30 days to try it at home and return it if you find it's not for you."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
