Abit late I know, but for anyone else who finds this.. as you needed to sudo on command line to copy, you would need to do similar on the GUI. For using the GUI, you could open the terminal and type:
    sudo nautilus

This will launch the folder browser for you as sudo, and should allow you to move/copy what you want.

Damn - I knew that once, not long ago - those brain cells must have died...

Sorry, that would have saved a bit of time (though I'm not sure it would have preserved the permissions as needed by the TV).

Good to hear it worked, and that it hasn't put you off trying out Ubuntu (or similar) further. There are some things you'll probably really like about Linux, but working at the command line probably won't be one of them...

You should never use normal sudo to start graphical applications as root. You should use gksudo (kdesudo on Kubuntu) to run such programs. gksudo sets HOME=~root, and copies .Xauthority to a tmp directory. This prevents files in your home directory becoming owned by root.

So you should use gksudo nautilus.

Or if using Mint just use "open as administrator" form the menu.

I would suggest using Clonezilla which can be found on the wonderfully useful partedmagic. Clonzilla this handles XFS with no problem.
