Many years ago back in the eighties i was in New York and i lost the return part of my ticket for my flight back to the UK when i went to the check in desk and explained i had lost my ticket they said that if i had no ticket or proof of payment that i would have to buy another ticket which i did , A person told me later that i should not have paid as i had already paid for my return . did i have to pay again ? as this was a long time ago it is now only a matter of interest

You could have paid but also completed a form of indemnity -which would have covered you -if you couldn't supply enough info they could have got you to pay and refund after a year with the form if the ticket wasn't used in that time.
Fortunately nowdays with e-tickets things are much easier to resolve as there is no physical ticket to lose.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
