win sp2 av/ firewall probs

just installed win sp2 - it recognises my avast AV but is warning me it is switched off:rolleyes: - but it isn't- as far as im 99.9% aware , and when i try to check windows firewall so that its not running alongside my sygate firewall i get message "due to an unidentified problem windows cannot dispaly firewall settings"
i need to check windows firewall as it seems to have messed my emule connection:mad:
