Change of Name

My son (who is now 18) changed his name by deed poll when I re-married (about 12 years ago) he has now decided he wants to revert to his birth name.

As his birth certificate still shows the name he wants to change to can he just write to the bank etc enclosing a copy of his birth certificate asking for the name to be changed or does he need something more?

Also his passport is due for renewal and he will be applying for his first adult one - if he puts down his last passport number will that confuse matters as it is in a different name to the one he wants his adult passport in!

Hi, You don't have to legally change your name if you want to be known as something else, but I think that if you want to change your name on things like bank accounts/bills you have to be able to prove that you are known by that name.

I would take a look at the link below for some advice - you could email them to ask about your specific question. By the sounds of it (I am not expert bear in mind!) your son should be able to change his name at the bank using his birth certificate but if he wants to be known by his birth name it may be best to change by deed poll again so that he doesn't have to worry about this issue?

    Hope this help!

My son did EXACTLY this, changed his name by deed poll at age 11 to match my new married name then at 18 went back to his birth name and all we did when he applied for his new passport was enclose a covering letter (and copies of the deed of name change and birth cert) saying Mum changed his name but now as an adult he wanted to revert to his birth name and it was done, no fuss, no questions etc
He did the same with everything and had no problems whatsoever

Thanks for this - think this is the route we'll go down rather than paying for someone to draw up a document.
