East Coast rail- £2.20 for a sachet of coffee!

I haven't travelled a distance with them where I wanted a coffee until last Saturday.

I was amazed to see the attendant tear the top off a sachet and then charge me £4:40 for two coffees!

At that price, I expect PROPER coffee, NOT a Starbucks sachet!

Even the tea is now £1.85!

Well, theyv'e caught me once but it won't happen again, I'd rather eat my own liver than pay for this rubbish!

I find that East Coast fares are really quite steep sometimes, then throw in the price of food and coffee/tea on board, I feel like lugging a pic-nic with me sometimes!

The best one I ever encountered was a dirt cheap fare online of around £3, which it wouldn't let me buy, because they didn't do card payments under some silly amount. (prolly around a fiver) Don't know if that still exists as a problem though. How else are you meant to buy these online fares?

I've found that with a bit of planning and flexibility, you can often get a first class fare on East Cost for less than sceond on them or anyone else.

    Coffee is free there! ;)

IIRC they also reduced the cup size at the same time as the prices went-up but complaints about the tiny thing that replaced it forced them to reinstate the old size.

I've sent an e mail to them asking why there is such a huge increase, meanwhile we are going to London tomorrow for two nights, complete with flask, saving £8.80 both ways and Nescafe Gold , too!

With a rail card I now do consider 1st class a lot on their trains. even though we're old rolling stock, and it's the old pull down window, reach out, open the door ones >.< Last one I took, couldn't even get the window down with no one to be seen train staff wise! In the end we were banging on it, and someone who walked past let us out!

Also often they will actually give you two coffees if you ask. Tempting to take in a mug, rather than the cup though!
