Nationwide and Legal and General (Mortgage)

Back in February myself and husband had an all round financial check up with Nationwide. We took out decreasing insurance on the mortgage 11 years ago and the policy is now out of date as we since have had a remortgage. The FA took our details for the new policy in both our names (previous policy was in husbands name only as mortgage in his name).

Anyway I was declined due to medical reasons. Since February I have had numerous telephone calls with Legal and General as I wanted the reasons in writing. I am still waiting and basically I have had enough of their terrible service. They offered the policy in my husbands name which we were going to go with but its been over 2 months now and still no letter. Also the other day Legal and General sent a random letter to my husband saying his policy had been declined due to time off work ????

I have been in touch with the FA today and said I want to make a complaint but wondered if Nationwide could make this complaint. I feel that as I am a customer of Nationwide this shocking service is going against them.

My question is can I have the mortgage with Nationwide and have the decreasing policy for the mortgage with another provider ?

Yes, however nationwide may only deal with L&G but im not sure about that. So you might have to get your insurance through another advisor ro direct if you choose.

They dont usually send a letter explaining which medical conditions they have declined the policy for, they would usually send it to your GP.

As for time off work - that isnt a reason they would decline life insurance unless that time off work was linked to a medical condition - they may however be declining Waiver of Premium possibly?

  • Hi,

Yes you can have your insurance with any provider you like, any broker can give you the best quotes on the market and depending on your health problems you may also be able to get cover with premium loadings applied.

Income is only looked into by insurers when you apply for a high sum assured. But the provider should put the reason for the decline in writing to you.

If you are declined for medical reasons, the life office will forward the details of why you were declined to your GP, sending you a letter to ask you to contact your GP to make an appointment, where your GP can explain the decision to you.

Under AMRA, your doctor can withold any information he may consider to be detrimental to your physical or mental wellbeing.

A tied agent, such as a Nationwide employee, can only provide "advice" on Legal & General products. Banks, building societies and national estate agency chains tend to be tied, or own captive life operations, as it earns them more commission.

There are also multi-tied advisers, who work from a panel of insurers.

Only Independent Financial Advisers can select from the whole market of providers.
