At weekend I bought a new tv for my other half as a birthday pressie.
I was really chuffed that I could do it and wanted to surprise him, however the edge has been taken off it because the picture is lousy.
When its played direct through the ariel on its own the picture is great, but when it is played through the Sky box its awful.
I have rung Sky and been told that our box is now out of date (its 19 months since it was installed!!!!) because it dosnt have a point to connect an HDMI lead and can only be connected by a scart lead. Another probem being that there is only one scart lead point on the TV and we also have a DVD player we need to connect by scart.
I spoke to 2 people at Sky (the first gentleman obviously in India told me td 'go to comet and get a long wire':rotfl:
He then put me through to the technical support team and we got a nice Scots lady who tried to help but finally said that because our box is 'old' there was nothing they can do other than upgrade our box for the sum of £109 plus vat.
She told us that we would never get a brilliant picture on the TV with the Sky box we have as it does not fit a HDMI cable. Is this a sales technique or the truth? Im not happy that we have a box which has only been installed 19 months and is now classed as obsolete. Ive saved hard for the TV and am not really in a position to pay Sky another £130.
Is there anything I can do to get round this and have a decent picture?

ring and say you wish to cancel as its no use with your new TV , retentions may well then waive the charge
in return for a new 12 month contract

def agree re the cancel saga - I wanted multiroom, as was quoted £200 for the box, plus £40 fitting, that was just for a sky+box, so I said no problem, I'm out of contract bye bye, next minute - sky+HD box free, fitting free, and 3 months multi room for free.
xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
Pleas tell us the make and model of the TV, and the model of the sky box0

Thank you for the replies, we did think of the cancel thing but there is a slight problem with that. We live in a 3 storey house and my son has the top floor. He pays for the Sky package and has a Hd box compatible with his TV upstairs and we have the normal box downstairs so ours is just the 2nd bow on the account.
The Tv is a Sansung Series 5, class 503. The Skybox is DV3 on the left hand side of the display panel so I assume this is the model number?
Thanks for the replies again.0 -
You could try your TV connected to the HD box upstairs and see if it works properly.
I had the same issue with a disappointing picture via SCART. My solution was to buy a used HD box from an ebay seller. It came with remote, an HDMI cable and 12 months guarantee and cost £75. Sky will pair it up with your viewing card if you call support.
The picture is much improved and even without the Sky HD subscription several HD channels are available (BBC HD, Channel 5 D etc.)

Hi
Just read the manuals - I'd suggest just connecting the scary lead from the sky box to the tv at first. According to Samsung the scary is set to accept RGB. Go into the tools on the sky box and find the scary output, change this to RGB and save. See if this improves the image.
Does your DVD have two scarts? Or a HDMI. If it has HDMI then use this to connect to the TV. if not and it has two scart sockets, then connect sky to DVD then to TV. As others have said a new sky box would be the best route to take - loads on eBay.0
