Computer connected to lcd tv

Hi, hope someone can help, I have connected my computer to an F & H 42" LCD TV full HD via an HDMI cable. Got it up and running and I used 800 x 600 resolution as this is comfortable to view. My tv isn't displaying quite all of the desktop but is usable, but when my computer goes into standby and then back out of standby, my tv then shows DVI 3 as the display, but then my desktop fits perfectly. I sometimes go into standby and back out just to get this perfect fit, but if I play a game and the game changes the resolution, the tv goes into HDMI as the display and then loses the edges again. I hope someone can help me out, also my Dad has got this sort of setup with a 40" Samsung LCD TV and works perfectly. Thanks for reading.

For best display quality you need to set the PC resolution to be the same as the native pixel resolution of the TV.
For full HD that will normally be 1920 * 1080 pixels.
The reason you initially have borders or edges missing is that the aspect ratio of your desktop does not match that of the display. It is probably trying to make the best of a bad job when coming out of standby by scaling one or other axis to fit.0 -
You want to be putting a 16:9 ratio resolution out of the computer, like 1920x1080, and you also want to have something called overscan switched off - you'll need to look in your TV manual as it's different in different TVs - my Samsung calls it 'Just Scan'.
Once you've done that, if stuff is too small, adjust font and icon sizes within display properties.
800x600 is the wrong shape for your TV, so everything will look squashed.0
