Talk Talk renewal - nothing signed?

Hi, I have been with talk talk phone line and broadband for around 4 1/2 years now, and have just changed to a different provider..

I have received a bill from them and they have already taken the money out of my account for finishing my contract early - which is fair enough. However I cannot remember renewing my contract with them at all.. I asked them how long my contract was and when it was due to end. They informed me that I had (according to my notes) been contacted by an advisor last June and agreed to sign up for 2 years and got 2 months half price calls.. Well I never usually like to sign up for more than 12 months in advance and the calls would not of swayed me as I never use my house phone!
My question is can they renew the contract over the phone or should they send you something to actually sign to agree to a contract? Surely they need a signed contract? How would they know they were talking to the bill payer? Can I contest the length of contract without them having any written confirmation? Or can I ask them to send me a recording of the phone call etc?

After a battle with TT myself I found that if you send a cheque for £10 to TALKTALK TELECOMS LTD (Pref recorded delivery) to DATA PROTECTION OFFICE, TALKTALK GROUP PLC, PO BOX 390, SOUTHAMPTON. SO30 9AQ. Write asking for copies of all dialogues between yourself and TT and copies of any contract. I am fairly certain within a couple of weeks you will have your cheque returned and a phonecall from the CEO office apologising and withdrawing/refunding any fees and will be given a direct tel no. to a manager. Worked for me and many others as TalkTalk will not want people to report them to the ombudsman.

Your contract will have a minimum term of 12/18 months, depending on the services to take and if you modify the package, the minimum term is reimposed. Your contract also requres a 30 days notice period, which means this will always be charged following your notice of termination - it never 'ends'.

A copy of your contract is a waste of time, you'll see the T&C's online, and you paying your bill means you;ve agreed to those terms, no need for any signature.

Just to contradict. I was 'sold' a package from a telephone call from TT. Phone Line, Broadband and Call package for 12 months. Got everything confirmed in black and white. Then broadband never appeared. After many complaints suddenly I appeared on an 18 month contract with broadband (Thou I still had not got it) oh and then then started charging me for calls because the 18 month contract did not have any call package on it either. Anyway I complained to various overseas call centres. I was told by many that the original package I had was not possible !!!! I also asked WHO had changed my contract? I never got an answer. After 3 months the broadband never turned up. I then followed the procedure above and TALKTALK suddenly woke up. Even thou apparently I was on a 18 month contract, I was able to leave after 3 months fee free, as I HAD NOT CHANGED MY CONTRACT as they said I had AND THEY FAILED TO PROVIDE ME WITH THE SERVICE EXPECTED. Obvious to everyone they do not want people going to ofcom. Believe me you should be verbally or have written confirmation of a change to you contract. If TalkTalk fail to do this from their Data Protection Office the don't have a leg to stand on and you should be able to leave at no cost to yourself. And the added bonus is you actually get a UK TT based person who contacts you !!!!

A verbal contract has exactly the same validity as a signed and written contract. Your contract didn't end, it just came to the end of it's minimum term. After that you are on 30 days unless you agree a further minimum term.
