Really Childish Gripe

My OH has family over at the mo' from Canada.

They are really well off - infact they are millionaires.

His girl cousin is in her late 20s just like me.

But unlike me she has never worked and is supported by her husband.

Don't get me wrong, she is really, really nice.

But for a few weeks now I have been listening to tales from my OH and his family about how much she spends.

For example they popped to Tesco last night and she spent £300 on sweets and clothes for her two kids, because she likes them to have things the other kids don't.

Last week it was £200 on handbags and shoes.

It's really childish but it's getting me down.

We are really getting to grips with our debts, I work two jobs, six days a week and have about £20 a week to spend on myself.

Now they are going out on a pub-crawl together and I dread to think how much money will be spent.

I can't go because, as usual, I'm at work.

I hate to sound mean because they are such nice people but I have trouble accepting the lady of leisure lifestyle when it jars so badly with my own.

try not to let it get to you - easy to say i know!
Its easy to spend monney when you've got lots of it (actually its easy to spend even when you haven't got lots!). She'll probably end up with spolit kids who don't appreciate how much they have.
I honestly think it is far better to work hard for what you have so you learn the value of money and use it wisely.

I know exactly how you feel,my parents are millionaires, while I am proud of what they have achieved, they seem to rub my nose in it and rub me up the wrong way,if I spend anything my mother always questions if I can afford it,but then will think nothing of spending £500 on a couple of outfits.
I was moaning about needing a holiday and trying to find a very cheap campsite for Easter,I'm not asking her for money, but thought maybe she would give us the twenty quid for the pitch, she said 'you can't afford to go away!' then carries on telling me about her plans for her cruise  and do I think 4k will be enough spending money to take.

Don't feel guilty for feeling bad, I have a pal in the US who has pots of money and she does not even realise that its so different from my way of life, when she tells me about her daily life, her whole day everyday revolves around spending money on , herself and family , theatre visits, art galleries, restaurants, holidays, weekend trips to NY , beauty parlours , hair dressers etc etc etc, the only 'housework' she does is putting on a load of washing occasionally and cooking a meal.. she has cleaners and gardeners etc, she cannot understand why I don't do all the same kind of stuff... I try to tell her politely I JUST DON'T HAVE THE MONEY, but she doesn't GET IT... so I just listen and don't let it get to me because I like her anyway...:rotfl:

She once told me she hasn't cleaned a bathroom for 30yrs and wondered why I was amazed.... hahahhahhahah

Try not to let it get to you. She won't truly value anything that she buys anyway and they'll just be possessions... whereas if you buy something it'll mean more to you because you earnt it and saved for it.
    Money is overrated anyway. ;)

When you're feeling frustrated, just look at your sig. If I'm reading it correctly, you've paid over half your debts in 3 months. That's doing fantastically well. Perhaps in a few months time you'll be able to do more things to please yourselves when you're debt free. Most of us here will never have the millionaire lifestyle, but at least what you've earned is all yours & you're not beholdant to anyone.

    thanks.

    I never thought about that.

It has been bluddy hard - I've taken a second job working at a pizza shop three nights a week, bringing my grand total of working hours to 55-60 over six days.

Plus all the handy hints and tips on this 'ere board - shopping at Aldi, energy savings bulbs, snowballing, ebay etc etc.
