HMRC has wrong employment history!

Good Morning,

I have contacted HMRC regarding a claim I have made for the return of laundry expenses. This morning I received a letter saying in order to follow my claim further can I confirm what earnings are from my other employment from XXXXXXX (A company I have never heard of!)

When I rang them they seemed highly confused when I said I have never ever worked for this company, and they said are you sure you didn't work there at all during 2009? And I answered No.

The conversation ended, and now I'm left wondered whether I should be owed a tax refund, if HMRC believe I have been employed by someone else all this time???

I wondered whether anyone else has experience with this? Am I within my right to request a tax return on the basis?

Many Thanks

The company they're quoting might be the payroll company that whoever you were working for used to do their wages.

    Happens all the time :)

    Don't worry.

Ha! I work for a cider farm, and this is a dentist practice that they have on record!! Gonna ring them back again now. I am also currently on a BR code according to my payslip even though I only have one employment. Think they've messed up big time! Thanks for your comment though

I used to get letters from HMRC to confirm my employment history frequently and several times received rebates from them until I started doing freelancing work and so registered self employed and did self assessments instead and then it all stopped (but still frequently got rebates but mainly due to pension contributions)

It could be that they have confused you with someone of the same name, or a similar NI number. Have you changed address recently?

Perhaps a letter giving full details of your employment history for the last few years might help them get it right.

Shouldnt make any difference re tax though.

Whoever you worked for your tax allowance would be the same.

Not if they've been taxed as a second job for their only employment. That means the first job (the one they don't have) has been given the tax allowance doesn't it? I think a BR code means no personal allowance?

OP, phone up and check with HMRC and really tell them you definitely haven't worked at the Dentists. It looks like a mix up of records or possibly even that someone else is illegitimately using your NI number.
