Travel Tips For Madrid Please

Hi Everyone
My family and i are going to Madrid in July. I would love some tips about travelling around, food and things to do inexpensively. We are a family of five with teens. Any hotels recommendations that are reasonable would be great.
I am at a loss about how much food will cost-are there cheaper places to eat or supermarkets.
Thank you inadvance for any tips.

110 degrees, sun cream...wikitravel,wikipedia, loads to see and do like in many capitals. I went a few years ago in March in shorts and t shirt at 80 degrees. July is scorching. I think you will have many replies, you have a few month yet lol.

Madrid is a great city. The easiest way to get around is to get one of these: http://www.metromadrid.es/en/viaja_en_metro/tarifas/abonos/contenido02.html

For eating out on a budget there's a chain called Museo del Jamon, a kind of fast-food tapas place. The food is pretty good and cheaper than average.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

The metro is very cheap & efficient, and a good way to get into the city from the airport (check the nearest stop to your hotel).
We managed to eat quite cheaply, just a case of looking around & comparing menus before you decide where to sit down. Generally, a set "menu de dias" at lunchtime is the best value, often including drinks.
Musea del Jamon is fantastic for snacky meals/sandwiches and feels very Spanish.
There is lots to see just walking around, especially in the old quarter (Puerta del Sol & Plaza Mayor) & parks (The Parque del Retiro is lovely).
Some of the museums have days when entry is free, so check that for the dates you are going.
I'm sorry, I can't remember the name of our hotel as it was a few years ago, but will post it if I find it!
    Have a lovely time.

Make sure you book a hotel with air conditioning as it will be HOT!

Remember that many galleries and museums close on a Monday.

Will you be staying long enough to have time to make a trip or two out of the city as there are several places within easy reach
