I think that's a very good offer they made you...

My first netbook (which was just an Advent cheapie) lasted me well for 3 years (Mar '09 to Feb 12). It was starting to get slow and buggy but I managed to sell it to finance a more modern version, and a better make.

I really wouldn't expect more than 3 years from a netbook.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

I'm astonished that they offered you £130, I'd accept gratefully if I were you.

And if I were you, and they didn't want the dud machine back (which they probably won't), I'd try to repair it, with used parts from eBay as necessary to keep the cost down. But I am a bit weird.

Unfortunately on this board it's more likely to be the case that you ask a perfectly sensible question, and some stupid / lazy / ignorant people reply.
  • Well, before this all goes too far off-topic... ;)

Factory restore seems to have worked (touch wood) - it didn't when I tried it before but I'm re-introducing my additional software very slowly to see if any particular download/install is what's tipping it over the edge (my money's on Samsung Kies...). So far I have my internet connection up & running and have set up Microsoft Security Essentials and so far, so good, I've had more use of it in the last 12 hours than in the previous month I reckon. So maybe it won't come to the point of me having to go back to Currys after all.

But thank you all for your input, very helpful. :T

It might be Windows updates. I once had a Windows update reduce a computer to a mere blue-screen on start-up (no safe mode, no system restore, no nothing), necessitating a complete re-install. Not much you can do to prevent it, but you can at least ensure everything is backed up to the hilt before allowing Windows Update to do it's thing.

But you'll probably be fine, after a couple of years the computer would've been carrying various grunge and glitches which will now be gone.
