What if you were catching the bus home?

You aren't allowed to leave the hospital unless you are getting a car home.

I thought that for one-off journeys you didn't need a car seat?

Only if travelling in a licensed taxi. So the friend could get a cab home, but I'm not advocating it! Far better to borrow a car seat.

'one-off journeys you didn't need a car seat'

Hmmmmmm...isn't every journey a one off? You can't go back in time and do it again...

For an under 3, the only exemption from use of a properly fitted child seat is if you are travelling in a taxi with no restraint available.

Over that age, there are also exemptions for short, unexpected (and necessary) journey and also where two child seats are already fitted precluding fitment of a third.

I think there is also an exemption if the car does not have seatbelts and is not required to have them fitted (i.e. classic cars) but not so sure on this.

You definitely need one to take the baby home from hospital - they won't let you out without one!

Urban myth combined with overly cautious hospital staff. They have to let you out and can't keep your baby, but you may have an argument with them. If you are walking home, for example, why do you need a car seat?

If that is true then that's ridiculous. Not everybody has a car or knows somebody who has a car.

When I had DS in Nov 2010, the family in the bed opposite were having this very row as the hospital would not let them leave.......

Doesn't sound too bad, stay there till the kid is 18 years old getting fed and housed at the NHS's expense :-)
