I know you can sell them on eBay....there is quite a big market for them, I think.

Ebay has a thriving stamp section. (You know it's big since it has a section to itself).

It's hard to offer general advice, but there are a few pointers:

    1) Don't expect to achieve anything remotely close to Gibbons catalogue prices. They are nonsensical. You would have your work cut out for you to even buy anything at the prices they quote. For most stamps, expect between 1/6th and 1/4.

    2) Be aware that a lot of stamps are virtually worthless. Modern used stamps in particular. There are exceptions, of course.

    3) Look at what is selling and try to work out how to divide up your collection. Vaguely described mixtures of used/mint covering many years will fetch very little even if split by country.

    4) Make sure that you provide a good photograph of each lot.

    5) If you do have any lots that you know are worth something, start at the minimum price you would find acceptable to avoid upsets such as a single bidder getting the lot for 99p.

    6) Do not send lots worth more than £32 other than by special delivery. DO not give the customer the choice. It's surprising how many very experienced dealers do, and think they are covered by saying that they cannot be held responsible for uninsured items going astray. Ebay rules say otherwise!

To be brutally honest, unless you are actually quite knowledgeable about the stamp market, it will be an uphill struggle trying to arrange a sale.

It's particularly sad when people have large albums left to them by relatives who have built up their collections by buying packets of cheap stamps and sticking them randomly on pages for each country. They are often worth less than it would cost to post them. Of course, they could always contain some rarity.

    Good luck.

I sold 5kg of stamps on ebay last month. Most of them were separated by country. I have been collecting for 20 years and realised that i couldn't afford and didn't have the time to sort them all out and house them properly. I just put them all in a big box and sold the whole lot as one mixed lot. I was hoping for over £20 and i got £60 so i was happy.
