I purchased a plum tree from Poundstretcher on 16th March and it was planted the same day following the instructions.

1st May there are no signs of life, scraped away a small part of bark and is dry and brown so I'm 99% certain it is dead. Spoke to the store who have said there is nothing they can do.

It didn't cost a lot of money but it was a mothers day gift and was wondering if they should be refunding me and how to contact customer service as the store were unhelpful.

What's popcorn got to do with it?
This seems to be the H.O. for Poundstretcher Lisa, but there are only phone numbers.

  • I think the newbie is expecting this to be a stupid post and to spiral into some OP bashing.

As far as I can tell it seems a genuine and reasonable question. OP, how did you pay? Do you still have proof of purchase? I would give them a call and see if they require you to bring back the tree or if they will take your word on it - I guess this will depend on how much it cost and how kind the person on the phone is feeling!

OP I'm not an expert but I'm not sure you gave the tree enough time, I bought two apple, a plum and a cherry tree 19th of Feb and planted them the next day and they have only shown signs of life in the last two/three weeks.

Also what did you plant it in? (directly into the ground or a pot/tub)
What did you use? (existing soil, compost, top soil)
Did you add anything? (fertiliser, liquid feed etc)

    Lots of questions

I don't have proof of purchase (paid with cash £6.99) but I have the label that was tied to the tree so will ask them if that is enough, I can try again tomorrow to see if I get someone more helpful.

I soaked the roots for a while and planted straight in the ground using existing soil and compost, fed it with potash too. You do have a point there fosterdog maybe I'm being impatient but I was told the best way to check for signs of life was to scrape a small piece of bark to see if it is green inside. The 'buds' just look woody and barely existent.

I'll have another look as possibly call a garden centre for advice before my next move though.

I know it is only £7 but in the current climate I can't afford to let money go to waste as such.

If you didn't have proof of purchase the store have done what I'm guessing they would be expected to do. Head offices tend to agree with stores in these situations as otherwise the stores stop bothering about being receipts as people can go above them then they have to refund/exchange anyway. There isn't a customer services at poundstretcher its all done in store. (Worked for them a few years back) The good news is if you put your happiest face on when you go back be very nice and explain they may be able to do something as the managers do have discretion to exchange without a receipt. (Or did unless they've changed it)

You could have spent a lot more at a garden shop and got the same result.
Hit and miss with plants, shame but that's how it goes.
Mind you with the weather as it is i'm surprised anything is surviving.
I'd be tempted to leave it a while and see what happens.

This was my next thought, my fruit trees are ok but some of our veg is really struggling after the battering it's taken over the last couple of weeks.

Interestingly though the only things I've planted that haven't shown a single sing of life and I think may be dead are two raspberry stalks bought from Poundstretchers, possibly something to do with the way they transport or store these things? Or maybe they leave them too long without water.
