Son leaving school, when do Child Tax Credits stop?

My son, who is almost 18 and currently in sixth-form will be taking his final exams in June. I wondered if anybody here knows when child tax credit will end?

I am currently unemployed and on JSA, I have read a lot of conflicting stories and am left very unsure. I do know family allowance is paid until the end of August and I assumed, possibly wrongly, that child tax credit would be too.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Thank You. I have heard a lot of people say it stopped when they took their last exam and I couldn't find anything that says that or anything different.

    Thanks again.

It is the date of the last exam, unless he intends to go onto university in which case it's the 31st August.

If he intends to go to university, but then changes his mind, you get CTC up until the date he changed his mind!

Yes, it is stupidly complicated. See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tctmanual/TCTM02230.htm

Thanks zagfles, I searched the net and couldn't find anything, I was going off what other people had said.

The day after he finishes his last exam he can sign on for job seekers allowance which will replace your child tax credits. You would then ask him to contribute to the household an appropriate amount.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Thanks HappyMJ, I was under the impression that he couldn't sign on for job seekers allowance until September. You have all been a great help. Thanks again.
