I've just moved home and got my mortgage with the Northern Rock, I've taken House and Buildings insurance out with The Coop bank becasue it was cheaper and much better. Northern Rock are now charging my £25 because I didn't go with them....can they do that?

Yes, it is a fee for them to check the cover is suitable.... many insurers will actually pay it for you to secure your business but obviously you have to agree it with the insurer up front. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

They didn't tell me this until after the mortgage was complete, could I argue a case if I present them with my buildings and contents cover policy from the Coop?0

It will more than likely be in the T&C of the mortgage offer which you accepted.0
-
It will be listed under the fees section of the quote issued to you prior to completing the application, and it will be on the mortgage offer.0
