You should still pursue your husband for child maintenance even though he lives in Australia.

Have you moved back to the UK from OZ?

I'm sorry, I don't have any advice for you. I just want to say 'well done' for being brave enough to leave your abuser and start a new life for you and your child.

Unfortunately long stories cut short never give the information needed.
Are you in Australia and have come back to UK to get away. Has Ex disappeared to Australia.
Depending on where you are in the world will depend if you can approach a woman's shelter for people escaping domestic abuse. It'll be something temporary until you can be housed permanently.

As a parent you can have CB and TC but you would already be getting them. When you have a job you will get Working Tax Credit depending on your earnings and you can also qualify for a Childcare element of WTC that helps a lot with childcare costs.

Well done for taking this huge step - but I am confused about one thing. Why will you need to pay for childcare when you won't be working?

Was there any equity from the house you were selling last year?

We had a house here and sold and went to Oz as he was offered a job there, there is no money left from the sale as there wasn't much equity in it anyway. I have now moved back to the UK, I have never claimed anything before not even child benefit! He still lives in Oz and has no intention of returning so I am on my own completely, no family or friends apart from my elderly dad.

I intend to get back to work as soon as possible so then I will need childcare and we all know how that is expensive, so I'm just saying how am I going to get by on such little. When I start working I know that I will not receive that much financial help but everything is so expensive, I'm very worried :(

All I can suggest is that you go over to the Benefits board and ask there about getting child benefit and how to go about getting Tax credits. I'm afraid I do not know, it was something I did straight after coming home with my lad.
