HSBC - "no further lending" marker

I applied for a personal loan with HSBC last week and was rejected. I have been with HSBC since 2004 - have had loans with them before - all paid off. Have a £1000 o'd limit with I have never been close to breaching. Never missed a payment and nothing obvious on my credit file.
I called them up and they said I had a 'no further lending' marker on my account but couldn't explain why. They said they will look into it.
Anyone have any clues as to why this would happen. I got the loan I wanted with Sainsbury without any problem, but it's a bit disconcerting to find this info out.

It may not be anything to do with what you've done. They could have changed their lending criteria, which you no longer fit in.0

What does Experian etc say about your credit history?
If you have paid loans off before and the way you run your accounts has not deteriorated it is a strange decision.0 -
Do you consistently pay money into your account?
Do you always have £50 or more in credit?
Have you had any late payments in the last 3 years?0 -

£4k a month salary + the occasional bonus.
Generally yes
Never had a late payment ever.
I had a call from HSBC this afternoon. They won't tell me why they put the marker on my account but they said they had now decided to take it off. So I guess I will never know.0
