No dialogue track from Blu-ray

This is a complicated one, so bear with me.

We have a Foehn & Hirsch 32' HD TV, which was connected to a Phillips Blu-ray (don't know which model, sorry). We had a break-in, and they took the Blu-ray, but left the TV. We bought a replacement Toshiba Blu-ray, hooked it up, and put in the disc we were most recently watching. It all played fine, so we thought no more of it.
This was in August.

For Christmas I recieved the Blu-ray Harry Potter boxset and settled down for a marathon. But - no dialogue track. Sounds effects, studio theme, score etc, all fine and audible. But the actors move their mouths and nothing comes out!

We tried the first disc (the one we used to check the initial set up) and still no problems - interestingly this was a special-features only disc. I also tried a Disney movie, and did not experience any problems. But any main feature, live action TV or movie, we get no dialogue.

We checked all the connections, swapped HD cables, HD ports etc, with no change. We checked all the audio settings on both the Blu-ray and the TV, but nothing made any difference (we've changed the settings to Bitstream etc but this makes no difference).

The player works fine connected to a different TV, the discs play perfectly if we use a PS3 connected to the normal TV. We have even gone as far as to buy the original Phillips model that we first had. But even that doesn't work.

It is getting to the point where we are beginning to question our own sanity. Any help greatly appreciated.

That is a lot to take in so can I just ask is it only one blue ray you seem to be having trouble with ? Is the blue ray from this country too ?

I would advise checking the cables but you seem to hav e already done that So my only other suggestion is try the film at a friends house to see if they have same trouble. If they do then maybe it just a bad film that didn't burn correctly

You should also remember that blue ray is not an approved standard this can sometimes causeissue with films

    Hi Millwall!

Yes, it is a lot to take in.

We have had the same issue across the whole of our small collection of live action TV & movie blu-ray discs, and on two different blu-ray players. We have tried the discs in our PS3 connected to another TV, and they play fine, and we have connected the players up to the other TV, and they play fine, so it's certainly not the discs. All discs and players were purchased in this country and (in the case of the discs) are original.

The annoying thing is, before we were burgled we had a working blu-ray set-up. The TV has been the same all the way through, and we've even bought the identical model as our original setup, but cannot get it working as it was.

It sounds like the centre channels are not getting through, there should be an option in the player to output audio as 2 channel stereo, PCM, 48000hz. That should get it working.

Don't use bitstream as that just passes on raw audio to be processed by an external device, i.e. an amplifier

Chances are it is a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack and you have a player too old to support it. I had to replace my AV amp/decoder because it didn't support it.

Unfortunately I don't think that's the case. The setup we have now is identical to the one we had before, and that worked perfectly.

Blackjack Davy - next time I am feeling patient, I will give that a go.
