Hi I have just run Avira on DS1 laptop and there are 317 detections of TR/Ramnit.AC.A.901 and TR/Ramnit.AC.A.900
Is this a virus?
The laptop has been running slow.
I have googled the above but can't find much info

Manual removal instructions here

If you do not fancy that, then download a rescue CD and let that deal with it, there are a number of rescue CD's available, this is a link to one

After removing it, if you reboot the CD and run a scan and it still shows, it may be part of the system restore set0 -
ramnit is evil  It is a re-infector trojan/virus, that can keep redeploying itself once on your system.....often a full reinstall is needed to fully kill it off......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Trojan%3aWin32%2fRamnitWin32/Ramnit is a family of multi-component malware that infects Windows executable files, Microsoft Office files and HTML files. Win32/Ramnit spreads to removable drives, steals sensitive information such as saved FTP credentials and browser cookies. The malware may also open a backdoor to await instructions from a remote attacker.0

Backup, format, reinstall.
Thanks, there is nothing to back up as such.
What do I have to reinstall?
I have tried to do this once before but was out of my depth.
The laptop came with Vista installed, but we sent off for the Windows 7 upgrade disc and upgraded it.
I have about 6 rescue discs (but I haven't numbered them!)
It needs to be done but I would really appreciate some help.

I've seen this before on another persons computer, it practically infected all of the exe and dll files of every application although it strangely avoided those in the windows folder. Anyway, it was possible to remove it with an avast boot time scan, but I would recommend a full system reinstall.0
