Problems with Live Mail 2011

I believe the usual method of transferring contact list from Outlook xpress on an xp computer to a new 64bit windows 7 machine would be to export them as csv . open Windows contacts file and import the csv
This appeared to work in my case except they dont appear within the Live Mail program.
If go to "start" and type "contacts" the list is there in full.
Is there some new procedure with the 2011 version of Live mail that I don't know about?. I cant see any obvious way of associating them
