Milk of Magnesia

  • I've noticed in N. CA USA that all of the much cheaper off brands of Milk of Magnesia other than Phillip's Milk of Magnesia have all been taken off the shelves of all the stores including Safeway who's own brand has also been taken off the shelves for some reasons that haven't been reported in the news or even in the financial chat rooms anywhere I can find. Although I could be wrong but I find this very suspicious especially since the other brands are now no longer available that the price of Phillip's brand is also now much higher than ever, nearly $7.00 a bottle before tax, which is just outrageous for any brand to be so high, while it seems maybe Phillip's is attempting to corner the markets or something which if true would be a very serious violation of the monopoly laws in the USA, so I'm wondering if others have found the same thing happening where they live. Even the dollar store sold the same exact formula without flavoring, same amount for one dollar a bottle, that is also no longer available. I checked the formula which is very cheap to make, the cost of ingredients does not in any way warrant such a huge high price for such cheap chemicals especially as available as they are world wide. I've found that simply using mineral oil and water or prune juice and plenty of water has the same effect and may be much healthier as this product can also become addictive and very hard to break away from physically besides the fact long term use can lead to serious consequences physically according to most physicians and publications. I'm planning to do further research to find out if there are actual trade laws being broken to corner the markets on this product. Please also don't take what I'm saying as gospel I could be wrong but one can't know the truth unless they actually ask questions and do their diligent research. Anyone else find the same problem? SEC? Thanks
  • MOM has also gone off all the shelves here, I've had 2 bouts of an upset stomach not even Imodium or gaviscon has shifted it. All. The chemists haven't got it on their shelves and they don't know when they will get supplies back in.

Where is "here"? I was in a London store and found it easily just two days ago.
  • I contacted Boots and they told me it had been discontinued; any one else hear the same?
  • I asked at the pharmacy today in Hants - the lady said they had stopped receiving it ages ago. She looked in her book of medicines and told me that as MoM wasn't in there it means it has stopped being manufactured :(
  • I've been trying to get some for a few weeks and nothing on the shelf or over the counter. I've just searched Boots.com and it's on their but as prescription only
  • Was out of stock everywhere I checked, Lloyds, Boots and Tesco. Widely available on places like Amazon on US import.

Tesco Pharm. claimed that it wasn't withdrawn due to any problem but because the company was having trouble sourcing raw ingredients for it....

Try Tesco own brand instead of gaviscon about a third of the price...

Milk of Magnesia seems to have disappeared in Portsmouth, used to be in Sainsbury's. It does look like some form of licensing scam by its new owners. Anyone know of another brand of magnesium hydroxide suspension? Apart from the revolting taste, Gaviscon upsets my stomach. On the fairly rare occasions I get an upset stomach MoM cures it almost immediately (and I've never found any alternative). Gaviscon ensures I get worse. Alas the shelves are full of the revolting Gaviscon...

Any chance anyone can investigate this? I loathe it when some company buys up a product and then takes it off the market. It doesnt really make sense except as some attempt to manipulate the market...

I found a list of brands of Magnesium Hydroxide Suspension. (Google search for magnesium hydroxide suspension brands)...

...alas it doesn't seem to be available online anywhere except the US, with a very expensive shipping price. e.g. 16 oz £7.63 + £24.94 shipping...
