How does the basic free Virgin Media 1571 Voicemail service work, what are the options to control it ??
I really want to know if you can switch off & if it stays permanently switched off.
Some answer machines when switched off, will automatically switch on if phone rings a long time, which I don't really want.
I can only find basic information on Virgin Media website, not detailed description of how it works & options to control it.

You have to phone Virgin and get them to switch it off. There's no problem, and it doesn't cost anything.
We had this for a short time and hated it. The phone only rang a few times before the answering service cut in, and we could never get there in time!0 -

I want to be able to switch on/off myself, not have to phone Virgin Media.

No you can't turn it off yourself. IMO it's a rubbish service and if you need an answering machine best to buy one. I cancelled mine as soon as they added it.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

It's always on or always off, the only way to control it is to phone Virgin, you can't do anything with it yourself.
We just got a phone with an answering machine instead. Much better, now we can see if there is a message as well.0
