Possibly because he hasn't got one.

Contact HMRC and give them as much detail about your former employer that you can lay your hands on.

If you ring HMRC enquiries and give them your national insurance number, they should be able to find these details fairly easily. Not keeping your P60 could be a problem as you should keep them for 6 years minimum. Is there any reason why you think you should get a refund on the tax paid? Did you earn less income than £7475 last year? Or are we talking about earlier years here?

HMRC should be able to trace it as long as you have the full address of your employer (or the accountant who does their payroll).

If they can't, it probably means he's been up to naughties so you'll need to report him, I'm afraid. And probably won't get any money back.

If it was 3 years ago - perhaps they just can't be arsed to find it.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Doubtful. You put the address in the system, press OK, bingo. Job done.

Doesn't matter if it was last week or 20 years ago that the OP worked there, ref numbers won't have changed.

Phone up HMRC. Ask them to send you a copy of your tax records for the last 4 years. They will send you a letter out with the employers name, the employers reference and what they declared you earned in those years.

Did you have the wrong tax code during the whole of your employment with that employer? It's not clear from your post. If a new (correct) code was notified during your employment then your employer at that time would have adjusted your tax deductions to reflect the new code. If you had an incorrect code for the whole period of employment you may be due a refund.
I agree that you need to call HMRC and ask for your tax records to cover the period you're asking about. Or quicker would be to find your P45 from when you left that employment, or is it lost like your P60?
