Trying to cancel 80 year old's Three contract

Hi,
My grandad has been with Three for around 6 years now, in November he took very Ill and was rushed into Intensive care, he spent around 8 weeks in hospital after being moved to a respite care home for around 6 weeks.
Three contacted him whilst he was in the care home, and he agreed over the phone another 24 month contract.
I don't really think he understood he was going to be tied in.
Luckily he has been able to move back home, however as he is unable to walk now, social services have put in a landline that connects him to his care network and family etc...
He will only leave the house for hospital follow up's so has no use now for the mobile phone.
I called Three yesterday and they want a whopping £170 to terminate the contract. The phone is a basic handset I have priced in Asda for £30.00, I even offered to return that.
I feel that they have taken advantage of an elderly man, who was not feeling his best when they called in January.
I made a complaint, I just wondered if anyone else found this poor service? Thanks

There must have been some benefit to him in renewing - was a new handset supplied, or a better bundle of calls? If not, then you have every right to complain, but if they provided a new phone, there is little you can do unless you want t take on the responsibility for the contract.
Despite his senior years, he remains liable for his decisions and it falls on family members to be vigilant, but not after-the-event.
Write to their Glasgow Executive Office 123 St Vincent Street G2, and explain the issue - saying commitments like thes should not be offered o 80yo customers without due care. They may be prepared to make a goodwill gesture.0 -
Hi Buzby,
Yes they did supply him with a new handset however it is unused as he couldn't use it and is still using his old one.
I need to dig out his paperwork to see what kind of deal he was offered.
Thanks for your advice.0 -
If the phone is unused and still boxed, mention this when you write as they may be prepared to accept it back, but it depends on them being charitable, so be apologetic when seeking their assistance.
Incidentally, I'm friendly with 2 80+ mobile users and they would be incensed if a network required them to (metaphorically) jump through hoops to prove their ability to upgrade, it's just when the memory does fade, only those close can spot the signs and try to tactfully prevent these issues arising.0 -
Yes I know what you mean, some older people would be offended.
I just don't think he clearly understood that he once he said yes he would be contracted.
I know that we as his family should have looked further into it, I am waiting for a call back from Three to let me know what we can do.
Thanks Again0
