I have always loved the look and design of a japanese garden. We have a lovely small Japanese style small tree in our garden but have no idea what it is, it was there when we bought the house.
Can anyone suggest the type of japanese styles plants we could put in a small garden. (Cherry trees are a bit big for our small garden)
This is the sort of thing I love

I can't find my old college coursework at the moment but a good starting point is this website http://www.buildajapanesegarden.com/plants.html
It depends if you want a low maintenance zen garden or a full blown Japanese inspirated garden with a fish pond and walk over bridge.
Japanes Trees - look out for names with japonica or japonicum, many will have textured bark which looks nice, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Trees_of_Japan
