Can someone else insure a car not belonging to them?

Hi

My daughter has a small run around which she no longer wants to run. It has 11 months MOT and 5 months road tax, but her insurance has now run out.

Could her boyfriend insure it by taking out his own insurance to use it for the remaining 5 months even though it is not legally his?

AS long as he states during the quote that its owned and registered to your daughter he should be fine.

Dont forget that insurance tho is for 12 months so if he cancels after 5 there could be charges for doing so. Check the t&c's

I dont know if you have tried calling any companies yet but most companies will not insure the vehicle if you do not have "an insurable interest" in it..

They certainly ask who the owner and registered keeper is but on disclosing your daughter they may well then not insure the vehicle.

Best to try a broker as they may be able to get an underwriter to agrree to the policy on a phone call..

You must have an insurable interest in the vehicle both at the time of taking the policy out and more importantly at the time of making a claim (unlike life insurance where it must only be at inception)

If you are driving someone elses car then 99% of the time you do have an insurable interest as inevitably if you were to damage it you would have to pay the person back for the damages you caused.
