    thats the problem here:)
before you do anything do get another opinion because these rust really badly in the place you describe and it usually gets lots lots worse once you go in

I'm not in the trade, of course (does it show?), but at least it's not a 'baby hippo'. I can't afford a Defender :(

Weird it's gone from never even being mentioned on past MoTs, to probably a reason to scrap the car, in a year. My initial question was about the garage's price but I've never had to have welding done and it makes me nervous. Sounds like it's goodbye towcar and I'll get a cheap old Fiesta and just not take it down the muddy track to my house. Blasted cars.

I'd get a few more quotes. But even £500 would be cheaper than a Fiesta for a years motoring.

Phone your local motor shop and see how much a sill would cost, it may be better than trying to patch it.

Here's a guy who did the same job and he seems to have learnt as he went along.

    £40 p/h here also.

For bigger jobs or time consuming ones i look elsewhere, Being a member of the clubs comes in handy for that.

I had an issue and a club member on the forum offered to do the work for me.

£35 an hour for me, but I have used the same place for years and get 'mates rates'
I fix thier computers and do some odds and soda as favours in return.

Mine is a small backstreet place, we have used him for all our cars for years and he is brilliant. £25/hr BUT unless its an emergancy there will be a wait as he is always stacked out with work - I wonder why.

While its definitely good advice to go and get a second opinion, you should also be thinking if you want the hassle now and in the future. When Discos rust, they just dont stop. You are at the top of the slippery slope and once you have got the thing through the MOT this time, it'll need to see the torch every year as well as wondering when the diesel pump is about to blow.
Get two firm quotations on the whole MOT job, then decide if you really love it that much. I'm going to suspect not and ebay will attract the first time buyers who think they will be able to sort it on the cheap.
